Hello hello hello. My name is Nico Coady. Welcome to my blog, Airplane Mode (APM for short). Like cheese with a fine wine, I believe blog reading fits with some great background music. “One thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain.” – Bob Marley So each of my posts will come with a suggested song to pair with your read but feel free to pick one on your own. That way you can feel some emotion, maybe even find some inspiration in what you are reading.

Song suggestion – “Wake Up” – Arcade Fire

Some background…

Just 8 months ago I quit my job in a monkey suit back in Kansas City and decided that life is too short to live in the parameters of a cubicle, looking at a screen until it’s time to retire. I decided to research avenues out of the norm to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the United States corporate life. Now, I just arrived in Bali, Indonesia to work as an ESL teacher and want to share everything from experience to life lessons.

Before I made my way to the far east, I spent 4 months in Central and South America. Why? My buddy Austin Sanders, a very like-minded individual to myself, had told me about a program in Costa Rica where you could receive your TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate while living in a beautiful surf town. I said sign me up so I quit my job and headed south. In my program, I met a proper peter from Long Island named Kyle Sturmann and we were good friends almost immediately. After the program, Kyle and I met up in Peru for a good 3 weeks of traveling around on a gentlemen’s tour of South America.

What does APM really mean?

I tell you all of this so you can have some background as to what my life was like at the time. I had no obligations, nowhere to be, and most importantly I had no sim card for South America. Living life on airplane mode is quite literally having your phone on airplane mode at all times. As a result, outside of Wifi I could really only use my phone for photos. Kyle and I started referring to it as living life on airplane mode and thus the lifestyle was born.

APM is so much more than just having your phone on airplane mode. It really stands for everything possible when you are not held slave by the parameters of your phone and the internet. There is something to be said about the beauty of living in the moment, and just how rare that is in today’s world. If we are to save this world from ourselves, I hope like-minded individuals exist.

This blog…

This blog is going to be my account of everything that happens to me while living abroad including how to live abroad yourself, my life before the move, after the move, the local food, different cultures, and just how incredible life can be when you live in the moment.

We are explorers by nature. Get the hell off of your phone and out of your comfort zone. People say that the world is so small now because of the internet but I beg to differ. I say don’t settle for any screen.

I just started a 6-month contract in Sanur, Bali, Indonesia. After Bali, I will probably take more contracts in different countries in order to continue broadening my horizon. My hope is to show you that certain stresses and anxieties in your life are just unnecessary and maybe pass on some wisdom from an old soul in a young body. All I know now is that my life is now sponsored by airplane mode.
